What is 'Stateful Packet Inspection'? Stateful inspection firewalls determine whether packets can get through the firewall based on the protocol, port, and source and destination addresses. For every request that is allowed by the strategy, stateful inspection firewalls open up a limited time window to allow response packets, but ONLY from the same host. Also, by maintaining information about previous packets, stateful inspection firewalls can quickly verify that packets meet the criteria for authorized traffic. This makes stateful inspection firewalls inherently fast.

I have a PPPOe connection to the Internet, is there anything special I need to do?
If your connection uses PPPoE, you will see a PPPoE adapter listed in the Controls Window. To allow your computer to make a connection to the Internet, you will need to configure this adapter to allow other IP as follows:
-
click on the name of the PPPoE adapter in the Controls Window
- click Configuration
- click the Advanced button
- on the Other Protocols tab, uncheck the Block checkbox
- click OK
Once you have completed this step, you can treat this adapter as you would any other Internet adapter by configuring the rules that you require. The firewall settings for the physical network adapter that connects to your DSL modem have no effect, all filtering is done on the PPPoE adapter. |
