WinGate
[Current version of WinGate VPN is 2.5.1 - released December 22, 2008]

Security

At the core of any virtual private network is security. A VPN is only as effective as its most secure segment.

WinGate VPN combines several key security measures to protect data transported across the network. With industry-standard encryption technology, a built-in firewall, extensive firewall reporting, and port specification, WinGate VPN allows network administrators to employ a secure and protected data tunnel over the Internet.

SSL encryption and X509 certificates ensure VPN connection identities. These technologies keep unauthorized parties from making a connection to the VPN. The 128-bit Twofish cipher encrypts data packets being passed through the "tunnel".

A built-in, packet filtering, firewall is included in WinGate VPN to protect the gateway server computers from Internet-based attacks. Gateway servers are safe from denial of service (DOS) attacks, ping of death, port scanners, Trojans, and Windows "backdoors".

Further enhancing the firewall is the firewall reporting. Administrators can view detailed logs of the activity intercepted by the firewall to better identify and eliminate possible security threats.

With port specification, a WinGate VPN administrator can assign specific data types to be passed on unique ports. By assigning specific ports, the number of "open" ports is limited, thus dramatically reducing vulnerabilities in the network. Ports can be specified at any time.
