BackupAssist 10.5.4

August 5, 2020

  • Fixed a bug that allowed the “Switch Trial Experience“ option to be available after a license has been activated.
  • Fixed an issue that prevented passwords being changed on WebDAV Cloud Backup jobs.
  • Fixed an issue that caused Cloud Backup restores to fail due to the inability to write certain files to the user profile WindowsApps folder.
  • Reduced the likelihood of getting a BA7002 error in a backup report, due to a timeout when uploading the catalogue to a cloud container.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause a Hyper-V Granular Restore to fail due to the presence of AutoRecovery files in the backup.
  • Improved the performance and stability of Cloud Backup jobs.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause intermittent corruption of an Amazon S3 cloud container if the Discover Backups feature was used with the wrong region.
  • Changed the structure of backup data in new WebDAV containers to improve performance and scalability. Note- existing Cloud Backup WebDAV jobs will continue to work as they were. The structure of the backup data will not change. The new backup data structure will only apply to new jobs created with 10.5.4 (and later).

BackupAssist 10.5.3

May 20, 2020

  • BackupAssist v10.5.3 is a simple branding update for BackupAssist Classic in preparation for the new BackupAssist ER Coming Soon!

BackupAssist 10.5.2r1

April 3, 2020

There was an issue in BackupAssist 10.5.2 which caused BackupAssist to hang under these conditions:
  • If upgrading from a previous version of BackupAssist and there are existing rsync backup jobs.
  • If creating a new rsync backup job using BackupAssist 10.5.2.
This release resolves these issues.

BackupAssist 10.5.2

April 2, 2020

  • Fixed an issue that could cause a destination check to fail while the CryptoSafeGuard shield is enabled.
  • A new error message BA1521 will be generated if an SQL Protection job has not backed up all of the databases selected in the backup job. This could be due to a timeout between BackupAssist and the SQL Server, or a difference in the selected databases and the databases that currently exist.
  • Fixed an issue where a backup job’s catalogue would be deleted if that job ran again on the same day and failed.
  • The License required warning shown on the SQL Protection button in the Create a new backup job screen, will now not be shown after an SQL Add-on is activated.
  • Users can now dismiss product and trial expiration messages at the bottom of the BackupAssist UI.
  • Removed an SQL Protection marketing popup that is no longer required.
  • Removed text from the BitLocker settings on the Set up destination screen that said the BitLocker USB key needs to be plugged in during a backup, as this is no longer correct.
  • BackupAssist and BackupAssist add-ons will not change their license status if a computer’s MAC address changes.
  • The MSP grace period for BAaaS has been changed from 7 to 30 days, to match the licensing period. This will prevent licensing issues from affecting installs more than once per month.
  • Fixed a problem introduced in BackupAssist 10.5.1 that resulted in a Site Controller occasionally losing its tunnel when connecting to MultiSite Manager after a Site Controller service is restarted.

BackupAssist 10.5.1

December 18, 2019

  • Some Windows 10 versions released since early 2019 have included a bug that can be exposed when cataloging Data Containers, or when restoring from historical backups on Data Containers. The bug causes a critical disk subsystem to hang, and can result in a BSOD and a BA4 error in the backup report. This update avoids the bug and allows successful processing of Data Container backups on Windows 10.
Note: If a hang has previously been detected on an installation then BackupAssist will prompt users to perform restores from historical backups on a different machine.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause a File Archiving backup job to crash due to duplicate entries in the catalog.
  • Made an update to handle ‘iSCSI target unavailable errors’ correctly for File Archiving and File Protection backups, avoiding incorrect deletion of backup folders.
  • Added an improved fail-safe for backup-time detection of Exchange Servers running on guests from a Hyper-V host backup.
  • Fixed issue to ensure that backups with large catalogs (> 4MB) can be successfully discovered from cloud containers.

BackupAssist 10.5.0r1

November 12, 2019

Update released to resolve an issue that caused File Archiving backups to tape drives to fail with error 'BA707 The backup location is unavailable or has been disconnected'.

BackupAssist 10.5

New features

  • BackupAssist now supports Exchange Server 2019. The Exchange Granular Restore add-on currently supports Exchange 2019 RTM and will be brought into line with the current cumulative update early next year. Exchange 2019 can also now be detected in a guest on the Hyper-V tab, when backing up a Hyper-V Server.
  • BackupAssist now supports SQL 2017. This includes SQL cumulative update 6 and support for the SQL Continuous add-on.

  • Added a new setting to the job creation wizard's Set up Destination screen called Start the first week of backups on this date. This new field allows you to set the date from which the job's backup schedule will start to run.
  • A column showing the duration of a backup has been added to the Reports screen on both the Restore and Backup tabs."
  • Updated CryptoSafeGuard with new detection rules for new ransomware types.
  • When a backup job runs more than once a day, you can now send a report for each run of the backup instead of sending a collated report at the end of the day. Reports are collated by default, but collation can be disabled by selecting the Change button next to Multiple Time daily, and unticking 'Only send one report per day'.

  • Improved the resilience of the NAS destination authentication process especially when the NAS is on a different Domain/Workgroup than the BackupAssist machine.
  • Update made to handle iSCSI target unavailable errors correctly for File Archiving and File Protection backups.
  • Resolved an issue caused by Windows update 1803 that could prevent RecoverAssist from detecting NAS devices from the recovery environment.
  • Email notifications will now work with versions of TLS greater than v1.0 when TLS v1.0 is disabled.
  • Cloud Backups to AWS destinations will now work with versions of TLS greater than v1.0 when TLS v1.0 is disabled.

Windows Server 2019 support

This release adds official BackupAssist basic support for Window Server 2019.

Basic support means all BackupAssist features, including all protection types and restore methods, have been tested and updated to ensure they work with a typical basic installation of Windows Server 2019.

Exchange Granular Restore

The following updates and fixes have been made to Exchange Granular Restore:

  • Adds support for Exchange Server version 2013 CU21
  • Adds support for Exchange Server version 2010 Update Rollup 24
  • Improves the handling of recurring mail items
  • Improves the reading of attachments in Exchange Server databases
  • Improves the handling of restores to a live Exchange Server
  • Fixes minor UI bugs
  • Fixes issues with the display of embedded images in item preview

BackupAssist updates

  • Fixed an issue that causes the BackupAssist services to shut down when a machine wake from sleep mode after 1.5 hours or longer.
  • To assist in maintaining adequate backup storage space, a new Limit kept backups option has been added to the Destination section when you Edit a System Protection job and enable Manually manage space for backup history. This new option is available when using Windows Server 2012 or Windows 10 and later, and it is not enabled by default. It should be enabled if you only need to keep a certain number of backups, or if you have experienced VSS issues on the backup destination. The number of backups to keep will depend on the amount of free space at the destination and how much of the free space is used up each time a backup runs.
  • Local and Network drives for System Protection

    Removable media for System Protection

BackupAssist 10.4.4

February 13, 2019

BackupAssist 10.3.0

March 7, 2018

Cloud Backup

  • NEW Private Cloud backups
Cloud Backup has a new destination called WebDAV, an extension of the HTTP protocol that allows clients to perform remote Web content authoring operations. WebDAV can be set up on a remote server or device, allowing you to back up to your own private cloud destination.
  • NEW WebDAV support for cloud vendors
Cloud Backup’s new WebDAV destination means you can now use any cloud provider that supports WebDAV. This greatly increases the cloud services supported by BackupAssist Cloud Backup.
  • NEW WebDAV cloud seeding
WebDAV is joined by a new feature – the cloud Seeding Tool. The Seeding Tool copies data to a removable drive in the format required for Cloud Backup. You can then use this drive to seed the destination.
  • Fixes to improve the reliability and performance of cloud backups.
  • Made an update so that un-referenced data will now be removed from cloud containers. This will save storage costs. (GMC_BA-1317)

  • Confirming a ransomware infection when there is a yellow banner (i.e. during a job's grace period, or if there is a low-risk of infection) will now block all jobs to ensure that the backups are kept safe.
  • Fixed an issue where jobs would become automatically unblocked (without a meaningful message) after clicking on the yellow or red CryptoSafeGuard banner in a small number of scenarios.
  • The CryptoSafeGuard algorithm has been modified to reduce the likelihood of false positives when scanning source files for signs of ransomware infection.
  • Fixed an issue where the "Whitelist selected file(s)" button would sometimes be incorrectly greyed-out in the CryptoSafeGuard potential infection dialog.

File Protection (Rsync)

  • Made a fix for rsync daemon server running on Windows Server 2016, so that when SSH instances are ended, they completely terminate and subsequent backups are not blocked from communicating with the rsync server. (GMC_BA-1384)

Restore Console

  • Fixed a bug which caused an exception to occur while performing a restore.

System Protection

  • If the destination media does not have enough space when running a System Protection backup job, a more specific error code (BA 2551) will now be logged into the report instead of the more generic error code (BA 2511).

    • BackupAssist 10.1.0 introduces CryptoSafeGuard, a new tool designed to protect your backups from ransomware.
To respond to a ransomware attack, it’s critical that you have reliable backups so you can restore data or recover your entire system. However, ransomware can also infect your backups, leaving them unusable.
CryptoSafeGuard protects your backups from ransomware using two features:
      • CryptoSafeGuard Detector - When a backup job starts, CryptoSafeGuard scans the data being backed up. If there is any sign of a possible ransomware infection, all backup jobs will be blocked from running, and email and SMS alerts will be sent if configured.
      • CryptoSafeGuard Protector - CryptoSafeGuard protects your backups from ransomware by allowing only BackupAssist to create, delete or update data in your backups. This feature runs automatically in the background when CryptoSafeGuard is enabled.
